Diagnostic Imaging Technology

16 Radiology terms

Hi, my name is Corina. I'm currently completing my second year in the program Diagnostic Imaging Technology at Ahuntsic College. My glossary is directed to those who would like to learn about Diagnostic Imaging and get a closer look at those terms that we use regularly.

Allergy
noun
A damaging immune response by the body to a substance, especially pollen, fur, a particular food, or dust, to which it has become hypersensitive.
Example: Peanut allergy is one of the more common food allergies.
fr: Allergie
allergy
Barium
noun
A silver-white metallic element of the alkaline earth metal group with atomic number 56. It is used especially in drilling fluid and as a contrast agent in medical imaging.
Example: it is important to remember that a negative barium enema doesn't definitely exclude the presence of a small tumor
fr: Baryum
barium swallow
C-arm
noun
An x-ray image intensifier.
Example: We would use a c-arm for a fluoroscopic intraoperative imaging
fr: c-arm
c-arm
Cathode
noun
Is the negatively charged electrode by which electrons enter an electrical device.
Example: Tomson concluded that the cathode rays must be lots of tiny particles of matter far smaller than the atoms with a negative charge.
fr: Cathode
cathode
Collimator
noun
Is a device that narrows a beam of particles or waves.
Example: This can be achieved using a collimator, which is a simple tube with an aperture at either end.
fr: Collimateur
lead collimator
Computed tomography (CT scan)
noun
A CT scan or computed tomography scan is a medical imaging technique that uses computer-processed combinations of multiple X-ray measurements taken from different angles to produce tomographic images of a body, allowing the user to see inside the body without cutting.
Example: A mass in Mary's appendix was detected and investigated using ultrasound and a ct scan
fr: Tomodensitométrie
ct scan
Contrast resolution
noun
It is the ability of an imaging system to distinguish between multiple densities in the radiographic image.
Example: Contrast resolution is usually measured by generating a pattern from a test object that depicts how image contrast changes as the structures being imaged get smaller and closer together.
fr: Résolution de contraste
contrast resolution
Electron
noun
Is a subatomic particle, symbol e⁻ or β⁻ , whose electric charge is negative one elementary charge.
Example: Rutherford soon found Beta radiation to be electrons
fr: Électron
electron
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
noun
Is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to form pictures of the anatomy and the physiological processes of the body. MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields, magnetic field gradients, and radio waves to generate images of the organs in the body
Example: The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in breast cancer is being examined in several distinct settings.
fr: Imagerie par résonance magnétique (IRM)
MRI
Osteoporosis
noun
Is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, which can lead to an increased risk of fracture.
Example: His additional medical history includes osteoporosis (which has resulted in 3-4 wedge fractures)
fr: Ostéoporose
osteoporosis
Peritoneal cavity
noun
The space within the abdomen that contains the intestines, the stomach, and the liver.
Example: the trauma increased fluid in the peritoneal cavity with migration across the diaphragm
fr: Cavité péritonéale
peritoneal cavity
Radiation
noun
The emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles, especially high-energy particles which cause ionization.
Example: Rutherford soon found Beta radiation to be electrons.
fr: radiation
radiation sign
Radiolucent
noun
Almost completely transparent to x-rays.
Example: the structure is radiolucent to x- rays
fr: Radiotransparent
radiolucent line
Spatial resolution
noun
Refers to the ability of an imaging modality to differentiate two adjacent structures as being distinct from one another.
Example: Spatial resolution is expressed in line pairs per mm (lp mm).
fr: Résolution spatiale
spatial resolution
Ultrasound
noun
Is sound waves with frequencies higher than the upper audible limit of human hearing.
Example: I have to take my daughter for her ultrasound
fr: Ultrason
ultrasound
X-rays
noun
An X-ray, or X-radiation, is a penetrating form of high-energy electromagnetic radiation.
Example: When the particles do these jumps, Bohr also stated that the electrons radiate x-rays.
fr: Rayons x
first x-rays
